Ribes odoratum 'Black Topaz', otherwise known as Black Topaz Clove Currant is known for its fragrant, bright yellow flowers and its compact habit. Blooms in mid spring, followed by an abundant yield of large, flavourful, sweet black fruits in July. Fruits are larger and somewhat milder in flavour than Ribes nigrum, with a complex flavour that includes a slightly spicy character. All currants are rich in antioxidants and have a much higher vitamin C content than oranges. Eat fresh or use for jams, jellies, and juices. Black Topaz Clove Scented Currant is a thornless, loosely-branched, irregularly-shaped, shorter than usual bush that typically grows to 5 feet tall and 5 feet wide. They are easy-to-grow, self-fertile, very hardy to at least USDA zone 3, and disease resistant. Drought resistant once established. Black Topaz Clove Currant bush attracts birds, butterflies and bees to the garden. Native to Ontario.
